Marketing Manager

Part-time · Contract · Fully Remote (Global)

Role Overview

The Marketing Manager is responsible for stewarding Sankofa’s public voice and ensuring the brand is communicated clearly, consistently and with integrity.

Sankofa is an emerging brand, and for many people, marketing content will be their first point of contact with the organization.

The Marketing Manager shapes that first impression. They ensure that Sankofa is represented with honesty, care, and coherence, so people can make an informed decision about whether this space is right for them.

Without intentional marketing stewardship, even mission-driven work can become unclear, misrepresented, or overly aspirational. This role protects trust as Sankofa grows by grounding visibility in truth, consistency, and lived experience.

In many ways, this role acts as a bridge between the internal reality of the community and the external story shared with the world.

This role manages Sankofa’s social media, email marketing, and campaign execution, translating mission, values, and lived community experience into messaging that helps the right people understand what Sankofa is and whether it is for them.

At this stage, marketing is not about scale for scale’s sake. It is about clarity, trust, and resonance. The Marketing Manager ensures that what people see publicly reflects the reality of the community we are building, not an aspirational version disconnected from experience.

This is not a trend-driven or growth-at-all-costs role. It is a strategic execution role rooted in discernment, thoughtful storytelling, and alignment between message, capacity, and values.

Why This Role Matters

What You’ll Own

You will own how Sankofa shows up publicly, shaping a clear, consistent, and values-aligned voice across social media, email, and campaign touchpoints.

Your work will translate Sankofa’s mission and lived community experience into storytelling that resonates, informs, and invites the right people in.

Success in this role looks like a recognizable brand voice, intentional and steady visibility, marketing that meaningfully supports partnerships and recruitment, and clear insight into what’s resonating and why.

  • You will own how Sankofa shows up publicly, ensuring the brand is communicated clearly, consistently, and with integrity across all marketing touchpoints.

This includes translating Sankofa’s mission, values, and positioning into language and messaging that feels grounded, accurate, and aligned with the lived community experience.

    This includes:

    • Serving as the day-to-day public voice of Sankofa across marketing channels

    • Maintaining consistency in tone, language, and narrative

    • Protecting clarity and alignment in all public-facing messaging

    • Ensuring marketing reflects what Sankofa truly offers, not an aspirational version disconnected from reality

  • You will own Sankofa’s social media presence end to end, ensuring content is intentional, aligned, and manageable within capacity.

    This includes:

    • Managing social media platforms, including content planning, posting, and engagement

    • Creating and maintaining content calendars aligned with priorities and timing

    • Writing and adapting copy for different platforms

    • Engaging with the community and responding thoughtfully where appropriate

    • Coordinating with Community and Partnerships to reflect real moments and initiatives

  • You will own the execution of marketing campaigns and basic funnel infrastructure that support recruitment, programs, and community engagement.

    This includes:

    • Planning and executing email campaigns tied to recruitment, programs, and community moments

    • Managing basic marketing funnels, including sign-ups, interest lists, and email sequences

    • Ensuring messaging is clear and consistent from first touchpoint through onboarding

    • Collaborating with Operations to ensure systems, tools, and automations function smoothly

  • You will support Sankofa’s visibility beyond owned channels through aligned outreach and collaborations.

    This includes:

    • Supporting cross-promotion, collaborations, and shared campaigns with aligned partners

    • Coordinating messaging for Sankofa features or appearances on external platforms

    • Ensuring Sankofa’s story is represented clearly and consistently when shared elsewhere

    • Working with the Partnerships Manager to align visibility efforts with recruitment strategy

  • You will own basic marketing performance tracking and learning to help Sankofa refine its approach over time.

    This includes:

    • Monitoring engagement, reach, and resonance across channels

    • Tracking email and campaign performance at a high level

    • Sharing insights and recommendations with the team

    • Using data to inform future content and campaign decisions without over-optimizing

Experience & Background

We’re looking for someone who brings a mix of strategic thinking, strong execution skills, and cultural fluency. This role requires both hands-on doing and the ability to make thoughtful decisions about how Sankofa shows up in the world.

You likely have:

  • 3–6 years of experience in marketing, communications, brand, or content roles, with a track record of owning execution rather than only supporting it

  • Hands-on experience managing social media end to end, including content planning, copywriting, posting, and engagement (not just ideation)

  • Strong writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate mission, values, and complex ideas into clear, compelling, and accessible messaging

  • Experience with email marketing and basic funnels, including newsletters, announcements, and campaign-based sequences that guide people from interest to action

  • Comfort using data to inform decisions, such as reviewing engagement, open rates, or campaign performance and adjusting approach without over-optimizing or chasing vanity metrics

  • An understanding of brand consistency, and the ability to maintain tone, voice, and narrative across platforms while adapting messaging appropriately

  • Experience working with mission-driven, community-centered, or early-stage brands is a strong plus, especially where trust, care, and integrity matter more than rapid growth

  • The ability to balance creativity with discernment, knowing when to amplify, when to pause, and when not to market something at all

    A Note on Fit

This role is a strong fit if you care about clarity over hype, alignment over algorithms and thoughtful growth over constant output. You don’t need to have worked in a nonprofit before, but you do need to be comfortable stewarding a brand where trust, values, and lived experience matter deeply.
